The Region 5 Leadership Team is pleased to announce that Ms. Christie Yarn has been named the new principal of Little Run Elementary School!

Ms. Christie Yarn holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Lincoln University, a Master of Arts in Early Childhood Special Education from George Washington University, and an Educational Specialist Degree in Special Education (also from George Washington University). Ms. Yarn has over 21 years of experience in elementary education. She started her career with Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) as a Special Education Teacher in 1998 and served as a Great Beginnings Coach with the Office of Professional Learning for seven years. Ms. Yarn has 12 years of school administration experience and has served as an assistant principal at Fort Belvoir Elementary School (in Region 3, FCPS) for the last five years.

During her tenure at Fort Belvoir Elementary, Ms. Yarn established the Wee Play program in coordination with the FCPS Early Childhood Curriculum and Grant Management office.  This program has engaged approximately 45 Fort Belvoir families of children (infants age five) in-play opportunities, parent-child interaction support, and parent discussion groups.  Ms. Yarn also reorganized and facilitated Ft. Belvoir’s kindergarten orientation to include a School Readiness presentation for parents, and an in-person experience for students.  This new structure has resulted in better transitions for the students, and an increase in attendance at the event (from 43 families the previous year to 300 families).  In collaboration with school staff, Ms. Yarn led Fort Belvoir Elementary in establishing a new 3rd grade advanced math class to provide greater access and opportunity for all students.  She also collaborated with school staff to develop a process for analyzing multiple data points that help identify students who are twice-exceptional and/or demonstrating social-emotional delays.

Ms. Yarn is an experienced, dedicated, and talented school leader. In addition to serving as the assistant principal of Fort Belvoir, Ms. Yarn served as the acting principal of Garfield Elementary and Clermont Elementary.  She has also received the Superintendent’s Excellence in Equity Award for the Top 10 average increase across ALL reporting groups in Math.  Ms. Yarn is a school leader who is reflective, collaborative, and has a genuine passion for helping all students to succeed.

Ms. Yarn loves to travel, spend time with family, and most recently acquired a new interest in researching family history.

Please join me in welcoming Ms. Christie Yarn as the new principal of Little Run Elementary School. She will begin the position on May 31, 2022.
