Dear Little Run Family,

We hope this email finds you well. We wanted to take a moment to express our sincere gratitude for the incredible energy and enthusiasm that filled our school on the first day of school. It was truly a heartwarming experience to see our students and families return to our beautiful learning environments.

The day was filled with excitement, laughter, and a sense of community. Our teachers and staff were thrilled to welcome back familiar faces and meet new ones. We were impressed by the students' eagerness to learn and their positive attitudes.

We encourage you to check out our first-day photo collages, which are located above. You can also find photos on our Facebook and Instagram pages. We hope these images capture the joy and excitement of the day.

We look forward to seeing everyone again tomorrow for day two of this amazing school year. Let's continue to build upon the positive start we've had.

We had a blast at our Open House and picnic! Thank you to everyone who came out and made it such a special event.

Creating lasting connections at our Little Run Open House. It was a joy to meet new families and welcome back returning ones.

Building strong partnerships between families and staff at our Open House. We're looking forward to a wonderful year of learning and growth.

A little friendly competition never hurt anyone! Our staff had a blast during our kick-off week, and we're excited to see what the rest of the year brings. Congratulations to Ms. Scappucci and Ms. Brown for their rock-paper-scissors victories.

Teamwork makes the dream work! Our staff is united and excited for the upcoming school year. Check out our silly antics during "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Cone" and our 24-25 t-shirt reveal.

Our amazing staff is full of experienced educators who are passionate about teaching and learning. They created their "team stats" to share more about their backgrounds and what they bring to the table.

A Message from the Admin Team

Dear Little Run Family,

Our theme this year is "One Team, One Dream", and our Little Run staff is ready!

We are beyond thrilled to welcome you all back to school tomorrow, August 19! Our doors will open wide to welcome our Roadrunners at 8:15 a.m. We can't wait to see our students' smiling faces and hear about their summer adventures.

Last Friday's Open House and picnic were an absolute blast! It was wonderful to connect with so many of you and learn more about your children. We are overwhelmed by your continued support and engagement.

We also want to express our deep gratitude for the families who participated in our listening conferences. Your feedback and voices are invaluable as we work to create a positive and inclusive learning environment for all students. If you have not participated in a listening conference yet, please contact your child's teacher directly.

We want to remind everyone that this year FCPS will be implementing 3 hour early release Mondays throughout the school year. (Detailed information provided in the newsletter.) To help plan for our school’s childcare needs during the early release Mondays, please complete THIS FORM for each of your children who are enrolled at Little Run Elementary. The form covers the first two early release Mondays, scheduled for September 16, 2024 and October 21, 2024. If you have multiple children, you will need to submit multiple forms. Staff will confirm the after school supervision plan for each student.

Our staff had a fantastic kick-off week filled with professional development and team-building activities. We are energized and excited to provide your children with an exceptional educational experience.

Finally, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our amazing PTA for treating our staff to a delicious lunch on Friday before Open House. Your generosity and support mean a great deal to us.

First Day of School

Monday, August 19, is the first day of school. See the complete school year calendar.

FCPS parents, students, and staff members are invited to share their favorite pictures or videos from the first day of school on social media using the hashtag #FirstDayFairfax. We will share some of the photos on FCPS Facebook and Instagram.

ACTION REQUIRED!!

The Early Release Mondays planned throughout the school year for elementary schools are essential to allow educators time for planning and professional development. Students will be dismissed 3 hours early seven times throughout the school year and are encouraged to return home via their normal route.  However, we understand there may be a childcare hardship because of the early release Mondays for many of our families.  To resolve these concerns, student supervision will be available for families who need it. 

The following dates are planned for Early Release Mondays throughout the school year:

  • September 16
  • October 21
  • November 18
  • February 10
  • March 10
  • April 21
  • May 12

To help plan for our school’s childcare needs during the early release Mondays, please complete THIS FORM for each of your children who are enrolled at Little Run Elementary. The form covers the first two early release Mondays, scheduled for September 16, 2024 and October 21, 2024. If you have multiple children, you will need to submit multiple forms. Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Starting in kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
  • Missing 10 percent (or about 2 days per month) can make it harder to learn to read.
  • Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day every few weeks.
  • Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
  • Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

  • Set a regular bed time and morning routine.
  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
  • Find out what day school starts and make sure your child has the required shots.
  • Introduce your child to her teachers and classmates before school starts to help her transition.
  • Don’t let your child stay home unless she is truly sick. Keep in mind complaints of a stomachache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.
  • If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make her feel comfortable and excited about learning.
  • Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
  • Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.
📵 Phones Down, Engagement Up: FCPS Cell Phone Policy

Keeping cell phones off during the school day helps students focus and learn. It also boosts positive social behavior. Review FCPS’ cell phone expectations by grade level with your child and help keep our classrooms free of distractions! If you need to reach your child during the school day, please call our 703-503-3500.

FCPS is partnering with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors’ services at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on-demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, and study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests. Parent/Admin Action Team

We are looking for families who would like to collaborate alongside the admin team to discuss pertinent topics impacting the Little Run community. Parent Digital Consent

Some FCPS-approved digital resources require parent consent before they can be used by students. Find the list of resources which require consent on the Parent Consent webpage. This page also includes directions for providing permission.

Woodson High School Cav Carnival - August 29 We’re Eager to Welcome You Back-to School!

As summer winds down, our school and staff are looking forward to welcoming students back to our classrooms. Before the first day of school, make sure you have completed the following:

Sign Up for SIS ParentVUE

Access your student’s attendance records, grades, and assignments at any time with SIS ParentVUE. Parents/caregivers should receive an activation code when they register their child. Contact the school registrar, Nadia Ruffner, if you need a code. 

Once you have activated a SIS ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. Information about students in the same family can be accessed through the same SIS ParentVUE account. Access SIS ParentVUE using an app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android devices.

Update Your Contact Information

To be sure you receive important information from your schools, update your phone numbers and/or email addresses in the Parent/Guardian section of SIS ParentVUE.

Update Immunizations and Records

Immunizations are required for all students to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of protecting them from certain diseases and keeping them healthy. Please log in to SIS ParentVUE to see what immunizations your child has recorded. 

Please check with your healthcare provider to make sure your child is up-to-date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia as soon as possible. If your child needs a vaccine, please make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or access other local services.

Remember to request your child’s immunization record and bring that to the school’s front office or submit the record via SIS ParentVUE as soon as possible. Find more information on FCPS’ website

Prepare for Meals at School 

Parents/caregivers need to provide their students with money to purchase meals at school, send them with a packed lunch, or apply (and be approved) for free and reduced-price meals benefits. School breakfast for students costs $1.75. Lunch is $3.25 for elementary students and $3.50 for middle, secondary, and high school students. 

The best way to purchase meals and additional food items is to use MySchoolBucks. If you have not already, set up your student’s MySchoolBucks account today. 

MySchoolBucks accounts can be set up to add money to the account automatically as needed, and families with multiple children can use the same MySchoolBucks account. 

Apply for Free and Reduced-Priced Meals

The application for free and reduced-priced meals is now available for the 2024-25 school year. Students who were approved for free and reduced-price lunch last year are eligible for the first 30 days of school this year (or until a new application is processed). Families should re-apply as soon as possible, so eligible students continue to receive meals at no cost.

Save the Date: Back-to-School Night

Tuesday, October 1 from 6-7:30 p.m.

🔖 Bookmark the School Year Calendar

Be sure to bookmark the FCPS school year calendar to keep track of school holidays, breaks, and observances:

  • Days marked with a blue “H” are student holidays. Schools are closed on these days.
  • Days marked with an orange “O” are religious and cultural observance days (or evenings if only half marked). There is school on these days, but certain events that cannot be made up may not be scheduled on these days. 
  • Days marked in pink are holidays for students, but working days for teachers and staff.

Note: Some holidays and observances, such as Eid al-Fitr, may shift and the calendar may be adjusted.

Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights

Fairfax County Public Schools wants all parents and caregivers to understand its policies regarding surveys, records, curriculum, privacy, and related rights.

In its Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights and Opt-Out Forms (Annual Notice), FCPS provides explanations of the rights listed above as well as forms that may be used to exercise opt-out choices. Two versions of the Annual Notice are available: a grades K-8 version and a grades 9-12 version. Parents/caregivers with children at different grade levels should read each applicable version of the Annual Notice, because the notices and opt-out rights vary depending on the student’s grade level.

Update Your Child’s Immunizations and Records

Please check with your healthcare provider as soon as possible to make sure your child is up-to-date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia. Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school. 

You can check your child’s immunization compliance and submit their immunization record in SIS ParentVUE. Records may also be delivered to a school’s front office. 

If your child needs a vaccine, please make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or access other local services. If needed, families may also provide other immunization documentation including a healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption or a notarized Religious Exemption Form.

What Is a School Board?

The Fairfax County School Board is responsible for running the public schools in Fairfax County. Twelve school board members are elected by county voters every four years. 

A student representative serves on the board as a non-voting member. They are chosen by their peers each year.

The School Board makes general rules and sets guidelines to ensure Fairfax County Public Schools runs properly. They follow the laws of Virginia and the rules set by the Virginia Board of Education. 

Learning about your local school board is important. Understanding their policies and initiatives can help you advocate for positive changes and ensure that the educational needs of all students are met. There are many ways to get involved.

Little Run Open House and Annual Picnic - Friday, August 16 from 2-4 p.m.

We're excited to welcome back both new and returning Roadrunners to Little Run Elementary! Join us for our Open House and Picnic on Friday, August 16 from 2-4 p.m.

From 2-2:30 p.m., we invite families to take the opportunity to explore our classrooms, meet your child’s teacher (if you haven't already during our listening conferences), and drop off any school supplies.

Following the Open House portion of the event, we invite all students, staff, and families to join us for our annual Little Run Picnic on the playground and field area starting at 2:30 p.m.

We can't wait to connect with our school community and kick off a fantastic year!

Our Little Run PTA will be selling pizza, chips, and drinks. Cash, credit, and PayPal accepted. 

  • Pizza - $2/slice
  • Drinks & Chips - $1 each
  • Combo - $5 (includes 2 slices of pizza, chips, and a drink)

Some of our youngest roadrunners and their families had a blast on their scavenger hunt adventure and playdate! So much laughter and learning. Welcome to kindergarten! 

Popsicle perfection with our principals! These sweet treats were the cherry on top of a fantastic time connecting with our school community.

Welcome to Little Run! Little Run Open House and Annual Picnic - Friday, August 16 from 2-4 p.m. Little Run Listening Conferences

We are excited to confirm that we will host Listening Conferences for all families during the week of August 12. Listening Conferences will be scheduled by teachers once parents have been notified of their child’s class placement, Monday, August 12. The goal of a Listening Conference is to build the home: school relationship by inviting students along with their parents/guardians for a brief opportunity in which families can share pertinent family information, build relationships, and share their hopes and dreams for their child’s school year. Teachers will be listening intently and may pose questions to guide the conversation.

Our preschool programs will begin soon and their will be no changes to their Open House activities. We look forward to welcoming all families to our Open House Picnic.

We will continue our traditional Open House Family Picnic on Friday, August 16 from 2-4 p.m. During the first half hour families are invited to walk through the building to take a last peek at their classrooms, visit our new librarian, and STEAM Lab. The fun will continue outside on the playground. We look forward to hearing your feedback regarding this new structure.

Limited Early Release Mondays for Elementary Schools: Steering Committee Update

As a reminder, FCPS elementary schools will have limited early release Mondays during the upcoming school year. The goal is to provide elementary teachers with additional time to meet new professional development requirements for the Virginia Literacy Act.

You can help us with planning for the seven early release Mondays. Please watch your email for a short survey from us asking if your child will leave at the early release time on these days or remain at school until the standard dismissal time. Your response will help us in planning activities for students who will need to stay at school until regular dismissal time.

We realize there are many details for us to finalize before our first early release Monday in mid-September. Thank you for your patience, we strive to create a positive and successful experience for students, families, and teachers.

Free Workshops for Families

Parents and caregivers can access free webinars, confidential consultations, a lending library, and resources to help adults support the success of all students, including those with learning challenges, special needs, and disabilities. Learn more about the Family Resource Center (FRC).

In September, the FRC will host webinars for families on supporting siblings of children with disabilities, helping students organize their school work, working with children who like to push boundaries, and teen development and well-being. Making memories and new friends at our Kindergarten playdate! It was wonderful to see familiar faces from Bridge to K and witness sweet connections forming through genuine hugs. Our amazing Kindergarten teachers were also there to share in the fun and excitement!

Popsicles with the Principals - TODAY, August 2 (Grades 3-6) - Inside the School Building

"What's New at Little Run!" Recap

We want to express our sincere gratitude to families and staff for taking the time to attend our "What's New at Little Run Elementary School" meeting. Family, staff, and community presence and engagement are invaluable as we work together to create a thriving learning environment for our students.

It was a pleasure sharing our school's mission and vision, as well as outlining the goals that will guide us in achieving student success. We believe that strong partnerships between home and school are essential, and we are committed to fostering these connections.

To enhance our collaboration and student opportunities, we are excited to introduce several new initiatives:

  • Action Team for Partnership: This team will provide a platform for parents and staff to work together on school improvement initiatives.
  • Listening Conferences: Classroom teachers will reach out to families during their first week back to schedule a one on one conference in addition to our Open House and annual picnic. More information to follow.
  • Quarterly Student Awards: We will be recognizing students for their outstanding achievements in attendance, academics, and character.
  • Get 2 Green ECO Team: Students in grades 3-6 will participate in environmental initiatives, while kindergarten through second grade will engage in curriculum-related activities.

We also discussed the results of the FCPS engagement survey and appreciate the valuable feedback provided by our school community. Family and staff input helps us identify our strengths and areas for growth. We are excited to celebrate that data show that Little Run families feel their students are welcomed and safe in their learning environment, and we will continue to build upon this foundation.

An area identified for improvement is communication. We are committed to enhancing our communication efforts and will be implementing strategies to ensure that you are informed and engaged throughout the school year. 

The slides from last night’s meeting are posted on our Little Run website. Be sure to access the QR codes embedded in the slides to provide ongoing feedback and to join our action team. Families can also visit the following links:

We are thrilled to share that we are fully staffed for the upcoming school year, with the exception of one Instructional Assistant position. We are eager to welcome our new and returning staff, students, and families.

Thank you again for your support and partnership. We are excited about the upcoming school year and the opportunities to learn and grow together.

Save the Date: Kindergarten Playdate and Scavenger Hunt - Monday, August 5 Save the Date: Popsicles with the Principals (Grades 1 & 2) - Tuesday, August 6 Save the Date: Little Run Open House and Annual Picnic - Friday, August 16 from 2-4 p.m. Summer Office Hours

Little Run's summer office hours will be 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. over the summer.
