Dear Families,

FCPS is working on plans to safely bring students back to school for in person learning. At LRES, small cohorts of learners who are in our Early Childhood Class Based (ECCB) Preschool program will be coming back to our school building on Tuesday, October 20th. If your child has been identified to return, our preschool teachers have been in contact with you already.

We are excited about welcoming back our youngest students in a few weeks!

Thank you for your continued partnership,

Monica Mohr
Principal

Dear Little Run Families,

As we close our first week back to school, we wanted to take a moment to thank you for all that you have done to help our community have such a successful week. We know that ensuring your children are logged in, managing their breaks, and serving as tech support can be taxing!  However, we hope that you also saw how excited your children were to see their teachers and classmates, to engage in their learning, and to have a school routine once again. We couldn’t do this without you!

Thank you for all of the kind messages and emails to our staff. Your words are powerful at a time when our staff is working harder and longer than they ever imagined was possible!

As always, we are here to support you as we navigate this time together. Please reach out with any questions.

Technology Help at Home

To support families who are working with their children during distance learning, Fairfax County Public Schools is launching a new Parent Technology Help Desk, effective, Monday, August 24. The number is 1-833-921-3277 (833-921-FCPS). It will be answered by staff 7 a.m.to 11 p.m., seven days a week. If the help desk is unable to solve the issue on the phone with the parent or guardian, they will enter a ticket on the parent’s behalf and the request for help will be transferred to the appropriate FCPS team.

Parents or guardians who need help in a language other than English should let help desk staff know, and an interpreter will join them on the line. (FCPS also has existing parent information phone lines, available in eight different languages, that can assist with general questions about FCPS.)

FCPS has also set up an online portal to allow older students and parents and guardians to request technology help directly.

Notification of Testing: Universal Screener

The Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) School Board adopted a universal screener assessment for use with all elementary school students in kindergarten through grade 6. The universal screener assessment includes a reading test and a mathematics test. Students in kindergarten will receive screening for reading only. Students in grades 1-6 will receive screening for both mathematics and reading. The purpose of this assessment is to identify students who may have gaps in foundational literacy and mathematics skills. Based on universal screener results, some students may require an additional assessment to further diagnose the specific learning areas that may need support. The universal screener reading test, together with any necessary follow-up diagnostic assessments, also fulfills state testing expectations for primary students. The universal screener and any necessary follow-up assessments will be given at the beginning of the school year (9/14 on). Depending on grade level and previous screener performance, students may receive screening again in the winter and/or in the spring. Schools set the specific dates for testing in each class. For the expected dates when your child will test, please contact your child’s teacher. Additional information, including a short video, about the universal screener in FCPS can be found at this webpage: https://www.fcps.edu/node/33718. If you have further questions about this assessment, please contact your child’s teacher or the school’s test coordinator.

Laura Mondragon- Special Education Teacher

I grew up in Texas but consider Virginia home since I’ve lived in the area for the last 18 years. As a special education teacher, I have worked with children from 3 years of age through adulthood.  In my spare time, I like to travel and enjoy trying different types of food.  This is my fifth year in FCPS and I’m excited to join Little Run Elementary.

Donna Zinnecker- Preschool Autism Instructional Assistant

I raised two young adults whom both graduated from FCPS and I volunteered many hours during their tenure within FCPS, while working in professions that led me to many accomplishments and successes.  Now that my young adults are grown, I have decided to join FCPS full time. My journey started with being a substitute at LRES in our PAC classroom.   My passion is to help children achieve their goals and expand academics.

Beginning of Year Assessments

Our teachers will be assessing students through a variety of ways during virtual learning. Please do not assist your child with any assessments as it will provide us inaccurate information of what your child knows and is able to do independently. We appreciate your support with this!

Resources to Share with Childcare Providers

If your child is engaged in virtual learning outside of your home, please feel free to share these resources with your childcare provider.

There are many videos and technology tips that explain the various tools we will be using this fall. Videos will be added over time, so please ask them to check back often!

Meet Some of Our New Roadrunners!

Charlotte Quigley- School Based Technology Specialist

Who chooses to become a Technology Specialist in the middle of a pandemic when all students are going to be learning Virtually? ME! I am so excited to be supporting the staff and teachers at Little Run this year with their Virtual Learning experience. I am also excited to be a part of such a wonderful community.

A little bit about me, I was a classroom teacher in FCPS for 7 years before transitioning to my new role here at Little Run. I taught 5th and 6th grades and loved working with kids of all ages. I am a FCPS graduate and graduated from Radford University too long ago! Please know I am here to support not only the children and staff at Little Run, but also the families! I can’t wait to hopefully meet students in person soon!

Debra Cockey- Band Teacher

Music has been a major part of my life as far back as I can remember.  I grew up listening to music that ran the gamut of the greats; Sinatra, Billy Joel The Beatles, and Motown, and was taken to performances from a young age.  When I started playing the clarinet in 6th grade I never looked back.  I hope to ignite that kind of spark in my band students at Little Run.  After 18 years in Fairfax County, I still love showing kids how much fun they can have while uncovering talents they never knew they had and I’m looking forward to getting to know the Little Run community.  I have 4 yr old twin boys that keep me laughing everyday, especially now that they are learning to cook with me while I take online classes with my favorite celebrity chefs!  Here’s to a great year!

Class Photos from 2019-2020

You can still place an online order for last year's class photo by going to https://scherlingschoolpics.com. Click on the option that says “Order Pictures & Yearbooks”. Enter the photo shoot code (FM330689). Fill in your name and email address, then click on Access ____ at the bottom. From there you will fill in your student’s information, view the items that we offer and place your order.

Parental Consent for Select Digital Resources

At Little Run, our teachers will use a variety of digital resources to support student learning and promote communication and collaboration with students and families. Some of the digital resources your child may use this year will require your consent before they can be used. You can find our school’s list of the resources that require parental consent here: https://littlerunes.fcps.edu/adopteddigitalresources

Included on this page is also a link to a form, https://isweb.fcps.edu/iscontacts/techpermform.cfm?secure, where the enrolling parent or guardian will need to indicate whether or not their student is allowed to use the list of digital resources this year. This page also provides more information about how FCPS carefully reviews digital resources for approval and why we must request your consent before using certain tools. We encourage you to complete the parental consent for digital resources form as soon as possible, as your child will not be able to use the digital resources until we have received your permission. Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have questions or concerns about the digital resources we’ve chosen to use this year.

Good Bye to a Roadrunner

As we start a new school year, it is always hard to say goodbye to some of our “big” RoadRunners.  Ms. Maurie Negrin, school counselor, retired this summer. We will miss the support she offered our families and know she will be back to visit when we open up again!  We wish Ms. Negrin the best in her retirement.

Meet One of Our New Roadrunners!

Brittany Belscher- School Counselor

Hi everyone!  I am Little Run’s new School Counselor. I am so excited to get to know all of you virtually to start this school year and begin connecting!  I think relationships are so valuable and are just as important through virtual learning!  I have been working previously in the counseling field and have a passion for helping students overcome barriers and reach their own version of success!  In my free time I love traveling, spending time with my friends and family, and watching sports (Go Bills, Go Tar Heels, Go Yankees)!  I am a firm believer that you’ll never regret a sunrise you wake up for, or a sunset at the beach!  I can’t wait to meet all of you throughout the year!

Public Library Equity Access Pass

As part of the One Fairfax initiative, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, Fairfax County Public Library (FCPL), and FCPS Library Information Services have partnered in the Library Equity Access Pass (LEAP) pilot program.

On October 1, 2020 the LEAP program will go division-wide, providing FCPS PreK-12 students with public library checkout privileges for books automatically, without the need to register for a physical library card.  Student names and ID numbers will be provided to FCPL through an automated data download.  Families who do not wish to participate can select the opt-out for LEAP in the 2020-21 SR&R document.

Participating in the LEAP program provides:

  • The ability to checkout up to three public library books at a time.  At any FCPL library branch, students or parents simply share their name and indicated they are an FCPS student.  A virtual account exists and identification is not required.
  • Lost or overdue books will not be charged a fine or replacement fee.  However, only three books can be on a virtual account at a time.
  • Checkouts are limited to physical books.  eBooks and public library digital resources cannot be accessed through this account.  Students are welcome to establish a standard public library card for full access.

The Fairfax County Public Library is open for Express services and offers curbside checkout.

Mental Wellness Consultations

The FCPS Office of Intervention and Prevention Services will continue to offer mental wellness consultations throughout the summer. If you have concerns about your child’s well-being or if your child would like to speak with a school psychologist or school social worker, please request a consultation.  Our FCPS mental health providers are available to help families get needed support through a 45-minute phone consultation or through secure video conferencing. Appointments are open to all FCPS families.

Consultations are offered in two ways:

  • Directly to parents of students in any grade level. This consultation provides an opportunity for parents to receive guidance on how to support their child’s social-emotional, behavioral, or academic functioning. Information about community resources will also be made available.
  • Directly to students in middle or high school. This consultation provides support and strategies to students who may be experiencing difficulties with anxiety, mood, behavior, or peer or family interactions; as well as academic challenges such as organization, time-management, or adjusting to a new school.

We encourage parents to take advantage of this service. Click here to request a consultation. You may also leave us a message at 571-423-4276.

Woodson Pyramid Listening Session: A Conversation about Equity

The Woodson Pyramid is comprised of Woodson High School and it’s feeder schools: Frost Middle School, Canterbury Woods, Fairfax Villa, Little Run, Mantua, Olde Creek, and Wakefield Forest.  The Woodson Pyramid Principals invite our communities to come together on Tuesday, August 11 from 7-8 PM to engage in a shared conversation around Cultural Proficiency/Cultural Responsiveness in our pyramid.  This town hall will be facilitated by our Equity Leads and administrators from each school.  We will present 3-5 guiding questions to solicit feedback around experiences and practices in our school community.  This discussion will allow schools to draw similarities for future work around equity and Cultural proficiency/Cultural Responsiveness throughout our pyramid schools.  Each school will hold a follow up town hall at another time to share specific actions happening in each individual school to address Cultural Proficiency / Cultural Responsiveness.  To attend this meeting, click here.

The Woodson Pyramid Principals invite our communities to come together on August 11 from 7-8 PM to engage in a shared conversation around Cultural Proficiency/Cultural Responsiveness in our pyramid. We hope you will join us to contribute to the conversation, a link will come to our families on Tuesday, August 11 via News You Choose.

Dear Families,

At Little Run, we are committed to supporting our entire community in a successful start to our school year. In order to accomplish this, here are a few items that will be rolled out to families in the next month:

  • Survey for parents and upper grade students about the successes and areas of growth from this past spring
  • A website for students and parents that will focus on the transition back to school
  • Resources and tutorials to support families with distance learning
  • Virtual family orientation sessions and a virtual Back to School Night

To prepare for your child’s return, we have also been working on:

  • An instructional schedule that will support student learning
  • Professional learning around strategies for teaching in a virtual environment
  • Plans to support students’ social & emotional learning
  • Ways to continue building our Little Run community

As we prepare for a virtual start, we are also keeping in mind the need to be able to pivot to in-person learning when FCPS determines we can safely bring students back to the building. We appreciate your patience as we work through these many details. Once we have more information, we will share it with families.

Stay safe, Roadrunners!

National PTA Meeting How Can We Safely Reopen Schools in the Fall?

A special event for the education community and parents to dialogue with health experts via webinar on July 16th from 7:00–8:15 pm. Register here

When COVID-19 began its slow spread across the country, schools in every state shut their doors to help flatten the curve—and they stayed closed for in-person instruction through the rest of the 2019–20 school year. And while businesses and other industries are beginning to reopen, it’s clear that the economy relies on our public education system for true recovery. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics have released their guidelines for reopening K–12 schools, though many questions remain as states and school districts develop their plans for the fall. Join physicians from the Infectious Diseases Society of America as they discuss what is known about COVID-19 and its impact on children and youth, as well as how we can help mitigate risks for transmission in schools for students and staff. Questions can be sent in advance through the registration link.
