#OneTeamOneDream❤️

A kaleidoscope of colors and smiles! Our students are making a statement about the importance of diversity and acceptance.

Our cafeteria transformed into a stage today as students and staff celebrated Inclusive Schools Week with a vibrant karaoke session. Using a variety of communication tools, everyone had the opportunity to express themselves and share their voices.

Our preschoolers were mesmerized by the W.T. Woodson Wind Ensemble's holiday performance at the Tiny Tots concert. They loved listening to the different songs and meeting the Disney and Holiday characters!

A Message from the Admin Team

Dear Parents,

Another amazing week has come to a close at Little Run! We want to express our sincere gratitude for your continued support and partnership in making our school community thrive.

We would like to extend a special thank you to our dedicated PTA for hosting an outstanding Bingo Night event. The community came together for a fantastic evening filled with fun, laughter, and camaraderie. We are grateful to Weyni Tesfaye of Adwa Ethiopian Food Truck for providing a delicious menu that satisfied everyone's hunger.

This week at Little Run has been filled with so many exciting activities! To honor Inclusive Schools Week, students showcased their karaoke talents and presented on the news show. Additional fun classroom activities were used to celebrate our school community. It has been a truly wonderful time. We are incredibly proud of our students and staff for embracing diversity and creating a welcoming environment for all.

As we look ahead to next week, we are excited to celebrate the musical talents of our students in band and strings. We also have another House Meeting scheduled for Tuesday, December 10th. Be sure to wear your house colors.

Dear Families,

Welcome back to another week of learning and growth! We are grateful that so many of our families were able to join us through volunteering their time and celebrating with students.

We hope you all had a wonderful and restful Thanksgiving break. We're excited to see our students back in school, refreshed and ready to learn.

Prior to heading off to break, we had an opportunity to spread some holiday cheer with our staff. This gift included fresh herbs from our administrative assistant, Svetlana Tsoy's garden. Our staff is amazing and we are grateful for all that they do.

As we head into the final stretch of the year, please continue to support your child's education by encouraging them to do their best and demonstrate "The Little Run Way".

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher or to the school office.

Best regards,

#OneTeamOneDream❤️

Our first house meetings were a huge success! Students in the Blue, Green, and Yellow Houses learned about community, practiced transitions, and celebrated their 1st quarter accomplishments. We can't wait to see what the rest of the year brings!

Little Run is so thankful for the opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving with our amazing students and families.  Our hears are full and we are grateful for our incredible school community and the joy it brings.

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving luncheon with our families! It was a great opportunity to connect, share a meal, and give thanks together!

Our 6th graders enjoyed an afternoon of camping and conversation thanks to Ms. Sutton.  This special event provided a wonderful opportunity for relationship building with their peers while they enjoyed hot chocolate, pizza and snacks.  Thank you Ms. Sutton for this incredible experience for our 6th graders!

Tutoring Resources for Families

Is your family looking for resources to help support your child’s academic success? FCPS’ Family Resource Center (FRC) maintains a list of district employees who hold a valid Virginia teaching credential and who are available to be hired as a tutor by parents. FRC maintains this list, but families are responsible for contacting and working directly with tutors. This list is not “approved” by FCPS and is only meant as a resource.

FCPS also partners with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors' services at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests.

FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3: Academic Growth and Excellence, reminds us of our commitment to supporting each and every student and helping them meet or exceed high academic standards.

SEL Screener Results

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

One of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is through the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener. In October, students in grades 3-12 took this screener, which gives information about their skills such as achieving goals, handling emotions, building relationships with adults and peers, and making good choices.

The screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create learning, experiences, and environments for students to succeed.

In early December, families will be able to view student SEL Screener results in SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent by mail.

Learn more about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For help understanding your child’s results or ideas to support them at home, review the Family Guide or contact your child’s school.

Register for ParentVUE

#OneTeamOneDream❤️

Our 5th graders in Mr. Arrington's class had a lively Socratic seminar that brought Confucius' teachings to life as students analyzed and discussed his words.

On Veterans Day, we express our deepest gratitude to those who have sacrificed for our freedom.  Their courage and dedication inspire us all.  Check out the slide show that Mrs. Maenz and Mrs. Burley put together to honor our Veterans during the schools news show.

Little Run Elementary and other Region 5 schools were recently honored by the Fairfax County School Board for achieving Purple Star designation!

A Purple Star designation recognizes schools committed to supporting military-connected students and their families. We're proud to be part of this initiative!

A Message from the Admin Team

Dear Little Run Community,

As the crisp fall air settles in, we're filled with a sense of renewed energy and excitement. It's a wonderful time to reflect on the progress our students have made and to look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead.

We're thrilled to share some exciting news! Little Run Elementary has officially been designated a Purple Star school! This recognition honors our commitment to supporting military-connected students and their families. We are incredibly proud of this achievement and the positive impact it will have on our school community. Tiffany Sutton, School Counselor, led much of the work with establishing programs for students and completing the application process. We are so grateful for her dedication to this work.

As we continue to navigate the school year, we remain steadfast in our dedication to fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment. We believe in the potential of every child and are committed to providing them with the tools and resources they need to succeed.

This week at Little Run we look forward to:

  • Reinforcing positive behavior with Roadrunner Tickets
  • Our first House Meeting!
  • Extra recess for the Green House
  • A special visitor on Monday (Ms. Alison Butler, New Assistant Principal)
  • Thanksgiving Luncheon on Thursday

Sincerely,

Christie Yarn

Services for Hearing-Impaired and Visually-Impaired Students

Students with sensory disabilities require specialized services and support to access instruction that is typically presented visually and auditorily (by means of hearing). FCPS provides educational services to students who are deaf, hearing-impaired, or visually impaired. They are supported in various settings, including at their school or through itinerant specialists who travel to different schools to work with students, rather than being based in a single school. Learn more about Services for Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and Services for Students Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired.

Visit the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) website for Resources for Serving Students with Sensory Disabilities.

#OneTeamOneDream❤️

Our 4th graders embarked on an unforgettable journey through history! They explored the rich heritage of Jamestown and Williamsburg, learning about early American settlers, Native American cultures, and the birth of a nation. From historic sites to hands-on activities, our students were immersed in the past.

The 4th grade class stepped back in time with a field trip to Jamestown and Williamsburg. They witnessed history firsthand, explored colonial homes, and even tried their hand at colonial crafts. This immersive experience brought history to life and sparked a love of learning.

We're so proud of our amazing Roadrunners who achieved perfect attendance in the first quarter! Tickets are earned and placed in their house's box at the end of each quarter. Students can earn a perfect attendance ticket each quarter by attending school every day they are feeling well. Let's keep up the great work, Roadrunners!

Our 1st grade mathematicians had a gourd time learning about estimation and counting! They estimated the number of seeds inside their pumpkins, then carefully scooped them out and grouped them by tens. It was a hands-on, pumpkin-filled adventure!

From apple to applesauce! Our Kindergarteners learned the steps of making homemade applesauce. After a delicious taste test, they even created a graph that certainly showed that the applesauce was a hit. Most students shared, "I don't like it... I love it!"

Our school was transformed into a magical world of stories as students and staff dressed up as their favorite book characters. From princesses to minions, Waldo to Shrek, we saw it all! It was a day filled with imagination, creativity, and a whole lot of fun!

A Message from the Admin Team

Dear Little Run Family,

We hope everyone is enjoying this long weekend! Happy Diwali to those celebrating.

Please remember that there is no school on Monday, November 4 and Tuesday, November 5. These days are designated for school planning and teacher workdays.

We look forward to welcoming all of our Roadrunners back to school on Wednesday, November 6.

Last week was filled with excitement and learning! We had the privilege of hosting the Woodson Robotics team, who shared their passion for STEM with our 6th-graders. Our 4th-graders embarked on a historical journey to Jamestown and Williamsburg, and our staff and students celebrated Storybook Character Day, transforming our school into a magical world of imagination.

As the first quarter comes to a close, our Roadrunners are eagerly awaiting the results of the House Competition. Who will be the ultimate winner? Will it be the Yellow, Green, or Blue House? Stay tuned for the exciting announcement next week!

We are also thrilled to recognize the 87 students who achieved perfect attendance in the first quarter. These students received special tickets to place in their House boxes. We encourage all of our students to strive for perfect attendance in the upcoming quarters.

Despite the upcoming shorter week, we are excited to continue our focus on learning and community. Thank you for your partnership as we enter the second quarter together!

Sincerely,

Christie Yarn, Principal

Lesley Hassen, Assistant Principal

Cavbotics, Woodson’s robotics team, made a visit to Little Run, and they brought their robot from last year’s competition!! The First Robotics Competition (FRC) is an international competition where students work with mentors to build a robot that solves a challenge. Our sixth graders were able to see and learn about the robot the Cavbotics team created last year, as well as learn about STEM opportunities at the middle and high school levels.

Native American Heritage Month

Native American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native Americans. It is also a time to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges they have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.

Save the Date: Little Run's Thanksgiving Luncheon is Thursday, November 21 Elementary School Language Arts Grading Updates

Our teachers have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers! This year we also have new assessments, which is how we check if your student needs extra help with reading and writing, and new Standards of Learning (SOLs).

Because of these changes, we are now teaching all of the Language Arts skills your child needs to know (and checking if they need extra help) throughout the whole school year, instead of different skills each quarter. While these skills will be new to your child in the beginning of the year, the goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.

This means that when you get your child’s progress report next month, it might look different. Your child’s teacher will give you more information on the new progress reporting and how we’re making sure your child is getting any extra help they might need. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.

We will also have new ways for you to help your child practice their reading and writing skills at home. These resources are coming soon!

Little Run is a First Time Virginia Distinguished Purple Star School!

It is with great pleasure that we inform you that the Virginia Council on the Educational Opportunity for Military Children voted on October 21, 2024, to approve Little Run Elementary as a proud recipient of the School Year 2024-2025 Purple Star Award. This is a major accomplishment for our school.

Our students, staff, and families play such a huge role in ensuring a culture of belonging and support for our military-connected families. Our Student Ambassador Program and Military Kids Club is thriving here at Little Run, and we are excited to see what's to come!

We are also honored to be receiving the Challenge Coin from the Department of Defense in the next few weeks, a meaningful recognition rooted in the military tradition of presenting unit coins to individuals who have significantly contributed to the mission. This coin serves as a nod to our strong connection with the military community and our commitment to supporting military families. Both the award and the coin will be proudly displayed in our front office, serving as a symbol of our school’s dedication for all to admire. More about the history of the challenge coin can be found at The Challenge Coin Tradition: Do You Know How It Started?  U.S. Department of Defense

We are honored to be part of such a caring and supportive community. We are grateful to serve the most amazing staff, students, and families, and this recognition is a testament to the strength of our collective efforts.

Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to the continued success of our amazing school.

To support students’ feelings of safety and security in our building, violent or frightening character outfits are not acceptable. No masks, weapons, or dangerous-looking items will be permitted to accompany an outfit.

Please talk with your child about how they would like to participate in this event. This is an excellent opportunity to read a book together and to talk about the characters in the book and their role in the story. Having this discussion at home will support your student in sharing their character with their class. There is no need to buy a book character outfit. Just do your best to gather an assortment of hats, clothing, or other props to create a simple homemade character outfit.

We look forward to seeing our favorite book characters at school on October 31!

Fall Celebrations of the Joy of Books and Reading

On October 31, here at Little Run, we have a tradition of celebrating the love and joy of reading with Book Character Day! You can show off your favorite character from a book by dressing up like them. Get creative! It's okay if you have to tell a story to explain your idea. The more creative you are, the more you tell us about your favorite stories and love for reading. We'd love to see a variety of characters, creative choices, and representation from the various stories we share.

One more way to show your favorite book character: the Storybook Tissue Box decoration competition! We are starting a new tradition this year; we are trading pumpkins for tissue boxes. In the October 22 Tuesday folders, you will find the directions for the competition. Decorate a tissue box to represent your favorite storybook and storybook character(s). Tissues must be functional and accessible so we can enjoy and use these all year long. This will support joy, creativity, and stuffy noses hopefully through the spring! We look forward to a lot of entries! Due: November 12.

#OneTeamOneDream❤️

These photos capture the essence of effective small group instruction. In a supportive and engaging environment, students are actively engaged in literacy activities, receiving personalized attention and guidance. Witnessing these moments reminds us of the power of collaborative learning and the positive impact it can have on students' educational journeys.

This dedicated team of educators recently attended the Solution Tree: RTI conference, where they gained valuable insights and strategies to enhance their teaching practices. Our commitment to providing high-quality instruction and fostering student achievement is evident in our continuous professional development.

Our amazing kindergarteners are beaming with pride as they showcase their incredible learning accomplishments after completing unit 1 of Benchmark. Their hard work and dedication are truly inspiring. Way to go, kindergarteners! You're off to a fantastic start!

Our 6th graders enjoyed a delightful tea party hosted by Ms. Sutton and Ms. Ruiz. This special event provided a wonderful opportunity for students to connect with their peers, build friendships, and have fun in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. Thank you to both Ms. Sutton and Ms. Ruiz for organizing this memorable experience for our students!

Ms. Edmonson and many families and students had a roaring good time watching The Wild Robot together this weekend. Joined by families and friends, the movie was filled with laughter, popcorn, and unforgettable memories. What a fantastic way to connect and enjoy a fun-filled day!

Ms. Brown and Principal Yarn smile with 6th-grader, Kamran, as they cheered on the Woodson High School football team at their homecoming game and parade!

We welcomed back the George Mason Softball Team! This photo collage captures the energy and excitement of our recent pep rally, filled with friendly competitions, high fives, and plenty of school spirit.🥎💪

Our pep rally wasn't just about cheering on our athletes; it was also a fantastic opportunity for our school community to come together as one. Students and staff proudly wore their house colors, showcasing their house spirit and unity. It was a memorable event that boosted morale and strengthened our school community.

A Message from the Admin Team

Dear Little Run Family,

We hope this email finds you well. We wanted to remind you that tomorrow, October 21, is a three-hour early release day.

Dismissal Times:

  • Families who have arranged for early dismissal: 12:15 p.m.
  • Students in need of child care: 3:15 p.m.

As we wrap up our Spirit Week, we want to highlight our Digital Citizenship Week. Our students have been learning valuable skills to stay safe and responsible online. We also concluded the week with a fantastic pep rally and house meeting, where our students and staff showed their pride in their houses and welcomed back the George Mason Softball Team!

We are excited to announce a new addition to our house system. Each quarter, students with perfect attendance will earn a special house ticket worth 5 times the value of a regular ticket. This means students have multiple opportunities throughout the year to earn these valuable tickets. While we understand that illnesses can occur, we believe this incentive will encourage regular attendance and help us achieve our house goals.

As we approach the end of the first quarter, we are looking forward to another great week of learning and growth.

Sincerely,

Christie Yarn, Principal

Lesley Hassen, Assistant Principal

#OneTeamOneDream❤️

Our fifth graders transformed our Little Run courtyard into a real-life archaeological site, unearthing the mysteries of the ancient civilization of "Barringtonia".

Witness the excitement and wonder as our fifth graders embark on a thrilling archaeological expedition. With each discovery, their curiosity deepens and their understanding of history expands.

These curious kindergarteners in Ms. Millard's class are diving into the fascinating world of time! They're exploring the differences between long ago and now, comparing toys, clothes, and even transportation.

#OneTeamOneDream❤️

Little officially launched our house system! The pep rally was filled with energy and excitement from students and staff as they were sorted into their houses!

Our 3rd graders had a blast learning about the importance of ladybugs and their role in our ecosystem. They carefully released their own little friends into the wild, watching as they soared off to find their new homes. Check out the smiles on their faces as they bid farewell to these tiny but mighty creatures! 🐞✨

Our 6th graders had an unforgettable experience exploring the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. They delved into the lives of famous Americans, from presidents to artists and scientists.

A Message from the Admin Team

Dear Little Run Family,

We are thrilled to share some exciting news about the launch of our new House System! This innovative program is designed to foster a strong sense of community, belonging, and school spirit among our students and staff.

This week, all Roadrunners were sorted into their respective houses:

  • Red House (The House of Fire): Led by the proud principals! All Roadrunners are a part of this house!
  • Yellow House (The House of Wind): Led by Ms. Gentry (6th-grade teacher)
  • Green House (The House of Earth): Led by Ms. Norico (2nd-grade teacher)
  • Blue House (The House of Water): Led by Ms. Edmonson (3rd-grade teacher)

Students will earn Roadrunner Tickets throughout the day by demonstrating our "Little Run Way" expectations and "Portrait of a Graduate" attributes. These tickets will be placed in their house's box near the front office, and quarterly celebrations will recognize the accomplishments of each house and its students. Additionally, houses will meet monthly to build community and strengthen their sense of belonging.

We are excited to watch our students thrive within their houses and develop lasting friendships. We believe this system will play a significant role in creating a positive and supportive learning environment for all.

We would also like to thank you for joining us at Back to School Night. Your participation and enthusiasm were invaluable. Teachers will be sharing their slideshow presentations, and we will feature information and resources regarding literacy in our next newsletter.

We look forward to a wonderful week ahead!

Sincerely,

Christie Yarn, Principal

Little Run Back to School Night is Tonight, October 1 from 6-8 p.m.

Tonight, October 1 is our annual Back-to-School Night from 6-8 p.m.This event is a great opportunity for families to learn more about their child's learning experiences and connect with teachers. We will be offering two classroom sessions from 6:10-6:55 p.m. and 7:10-7:55 p.m. Both sessions will cover the same information, allowing families to attend multiple sessions if they have multiple children or to choose a session that best fits their schedule.

We invite our military-connected families to join us at 5:30 p.m. for a special gathering to connect and socialize before the start of the classroom sessions.

In addition to the classroom sessions, we will also be offering three additional literacy sessions in the library, facilitated by our reading teacher. These sessions will provide valuable information and resources related to the Virginia Literacy Act and our new curriculum. The sessions will take place from 5:30-6 p.m., 6:10-6:55 p.m., and 7:10-7:55 p.m. We look forward to sharing resources, information, and answering any questions you may have.

Please contact the main office at 703-503-3500 with any questions you might have.

#OneTeamOneDream❤️

Celebrating our military families with a splash of red, white, and blue for Blue Star Welcome Week! #BlueStarWelcome

Capturing the joy and camaraderie of our Military Kids Club during Blue Star Welcome Week.

Excitement is in the air as our 6th graders embark on their first field trip to Hemlock! 🚌

Working together to conquer challenges at Hemlock! Our 6th graders are shining bright. 🌟

Teamwork makes the dream work! 👊 Our 6th graders are having a blast and learning important life skills. 💡

A Message from the Admin Team

Dear Little Run Family,

We are excited to share that our 6th graders had a blast on their first field trip to Hemlock. They conquered challenges, built teamwork, and made memories that will last a lifetime. We're so proud of their positive attitudes and achievements.

Join us on Tuesday, October 1, at Back to School Night to connect with your child's teachers and learn about their journey thus far and what's to come.

This is a reminder that there's no school on Thursday and Friday this week.

Finally, get ready for something new and exciting! On Tuesday, we're launching our very first house system at Little Run. All students and staff will be sorted into houses, creating opportunities for cross-grade level connections, and a strong sense of belonging. Wear red or your Little Run spirit wear!

Thank you for your continued support. We can't wait to see you all on Tuesday at Back to School Night!

Sincerely,

Christie Yarn, Principal

Lesley Hassen, Assistant Principal

Little Run Back to School Night - October 1

Please make sure to listen to a message from our FCPS School Board members:

Little Run is Launching Our First Ever House System!! Calling All Students and Staff!! SCA Spirit Day - October 2 - Grade Level Colors The Little Run Way in Specials

Are you looking for a topic to engage in at the dinner table this weekend? Or on the drive to your next destination? Ask your child about The Little Run Way in SPECIALS!

Consider asking your child(ren) one or more of the following questions:

  • What does it look and sound like to be respectful while learning in specials (music, art, P.E., FLES, library, etc.)?
  • How do you show responsibility when you are in specials with your classmates?
  • What does it mean to be ready while participating in specials?
Rosh Hashanah

Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown on Wednesday, October 2. That day is an evening-only observance day. Important events will not be held after school.

Thursday, October 3, is a holiday for all FCPS staff. Schools and offices will be closed.

Friday, October 4, is a teacher workday and there will be no school for students.

See the complete school year calendar.

🎤 Our Schools, Our Future: Register Today for a Community Conversation!

Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid will host a series of Community Conversations this fall. She invites you to share your thoughts and ask questions. Click the dates below to register for any of the following conversations:

Events take place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Childcare and language interpretation services will be provided.

✨ The 2023-30 Strategic Plan — Goal 4: Equitable Access to Opportunities

FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan sets five main goals to create positive change in the division. These goals show where we should focus our attention and will help us align our efforts.

The fourth goal ensures all students have the same access to opportunities, no matter what school they attend. This includes academics and other programs that inspire and engage students and allow them to explore their passions and talents. See how Goal 4 is being put into practice.

🗓️ Attendance Tip: Scheduling Family Trips or Events

Good attendance is an important life skill that will help students succeed in school and beyond.

When planning trips or family events, refer to the FCPS calendar and try to use weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent.

When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or another reason, you must report the absence.

Watch this video with tips on understanding our school calendar and visit our Attendance webpage for additional information. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!

Gun Safety and Safe Gun Storage

Providing students and staff with a safe educational environment remains our priority. Sadly, gun violence continues to impact schools and communities across our nation.

In FCPS, lessons on gun safety are built into our curriculum. It is critical that parents and guardians talk to their children about the importance of gun safety and safe gun storage in their homes, and in any home they may visit.

The FCPS website has gun safety resources as well as detailed information about safety and security practices at schools. See Dr. Reid’s recent letter to the community for more resources.

Safely Store Firearms and Medications

The Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board has a limited supply of free locking medication boxes and trigger locks that fit a wide variety of firearms. Visit the Lock and Talk website to learn more.
