A Message from the Admin Team

Dear Little Run Family,

It was an amazing week at Little Run! Our 3rd and 5th graders tackled their Reading SOL assessments, and we want to take a moment to commend them on their hard work and dedication. They have been preparing diligently for these tests, and we are confident they put forth their best effort.

As a reminder, we have more SOL testing scheduled for the coming weeks. To ensure our students feel their best and perform at their peak, please encourage them to get a good night's sleep before each test day, eat a healthy breakfast, and arrive at school on time. Their hard work and focus are truly appreciated!

We are thrilled to kick off Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week this coming Monday, May 6! Our dedicated teachers and staff go above and beyond every day to create a nurturing and stimulating learning environment for our students. Their commitment to our school community is truly inspiring.

Throughout the week, we will be celebrating these amazing individuals with love and thanks, coordinated by our wonderful PTA and families. Please join us in showing our heartfelt gratitude for their unwavering support.

🥎 Thank You, Mason Softball Team 🥎

On behalf of the entire staff and student body at Little Run, we want to express our sincere gratitude for their incredible partnership as our Adopt-a-School team this year!

Their support has gone far beyond a simple sponsorship. They brought energy, enthusiasm, and a genuine desire to connect with our students. We were thrilled to have them visit our classrooms and participate in lessons, reading books, coloring, and simply engaging in conversation with our students during lunch. These interactions made a real difference, building positive connections and role models for our young learners.

The student-athletes' dedication truly brightened the school year for both students and staff. We know they have busy schedules, so their willingness to give back to the community is especially appreciated.

As these young women head into finals, we wish them all the best for success on and off the field! We are already looking forward to welcoming the team back next year and continuing this fantastic partnership.

The school year 2024-2025 planning has begun! To assist in this process, we would like to invite you to provide some information about your child.

Your child’s current and upcoming classroom teachers work together with specialists, resource teachers, administrators, and the grade-level team to prepare class assignments for the next school year. They will review this form and consider the information relevant to the class assignment. Little Run has an incredible staff! Please do not request a specific teacher.

Your input is appreciated. We work diligently to consider all aspects of your child's class placement.

Please complete this form by May 10.

Feel free to contact Christie Yarn and Lesley Hassen with any questions.

Upcoming Lockdown Drill at LRES

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. We have a crisis management and emergency preparedness plan for our school that is reviewed and updated regularly. Our plan includes procedures on how to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Students and staff regularly practice these drills every school year. We also practice lockdown drills.

A new Virginia Law (22.1-137.2) requires schools to notify parents at least 24 hours before a school practices a lockdown drill. However, we are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill. We are required to practice lockdown drills two times a year. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any type of active shooter scenario training, they are instruction and classroom based.

We will conduct a lockdown drill at our school soon. All students will participate in the lockdown drill.

Additional information on our lockdown drill program to include parent tips and FAQs can be found on the Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page. After reviewing this content, you should discuss the value of these safety drills with your child.

Keeping our school safe and secure for all students and staff involves the participation of the entire school community, and we thank you for your help to keep our school safe.

🩹 Required Immunizations for Rising 7th and 12th Graders

Immunizations are required for all students entering 7th and 12th grades this fall. Visit the FCPS immunization webpage to learn about the required vaccines.  Caregivers should ask their private healthcare provider or the health department to review their student's immunization record to ensure that their student has received these required immunizations.

It is important to schedule immunizations early in the summer, as seventh-grade students must submit documentation of the Tdap and Meningococcal vaccines before they begin school in August. Twelfth-grade students must submit documentation of the Meningococcal vaccine. Get more information on all student immunization requirements.

💪 Let's Finish the School Year Strong!

Student attendance at school is important all year long, up to the last day of school. Attendance has an effect on student performance and on school accreditation. See how to:

  • Check your child’s attendance record.
  • Help your student stay engaged at school.
  • Report future absences.
  • Understand the FCPS school calendar.

Little Run Elementary PTA

We encourage everyone to join our wonderful PTA this year! Please click HERE to check out our PTA's website and to learn more about how your family can get involved.

The Nominating Committee is still fielding interest for the PTA Board's Secretary position. Little Run's PTA supports our staff and students in a variety of ways. Staff Appreciation Week, Book Fair, STEM Night, Classroom Grants, Cultural Assemblies and School Supply Support are just a few examples.

This is a great "starter" role for involvement with the Board. Attendance of 8-10 meetings is required but can be virtual or in-person. The Board takes into account availability prior to scheduling. The time commitment outside of meetings is minimal - 1 to 2 hours per month, total. Plus, it's an opportunity to meet and work with a great group of people.

If you are interested, know someone who could be or simply want more information, please contact Mia Detor (5th grade parent) at [email protected] by May 10th.

#EveryChildEveryDay ❤️ A Message from the Admin Team

Dear Little Run Family,

This week has been a whirlwind of exciting adventures for our Roadrunners! Our kindergarteners had a blast exploring the wonders of the animal kingdom at the National Zoo. The 3rd graders journeyed to Hidden Pond, and the 5th graders enjoyed a day of learning and exploration at Riverbend Park. These field trips provide valuable hands-on learning opportunities that enrich our curriculum.

We're thrilled to announce that there are more exciting field trips planned for various grade levels as we wrap up the school year. Stay tuned for details from your child's teacher!

A friendly reminder that Standards of Learning (SOL) testing for grades 3-6 begins in the coming weeks. Our teachers have been diligently preparing students, and we are confident that our Roadrunners will do their best. Let's all cheer them on and create a positive and supportive environment for them to shine!

A huge shout out to our talented students who participated in the All-County Chorus performance yesterday. Their dedication and musical ability filled the auditorium with joy. We are so proud of their accomplishments!

Finally, we hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful spring weather! It's a perfect time to get outdoors, soak up the sunshine, and enjoy some quality time with family and friends.

We wish you all a wonderful week ahead!

Sincerely,

Christie Yarn, Principal

Passover and Half-O Days

Many Jewish communities in the United States celebrate Passover, a recognition of the deliverance of Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. Passover is also known as Pesah, Pesach, or the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Many Jewish families in the United States eat a ceremonial meal known as the Seder, which involves telling the story of the exodus from Egypt as well as eating various symbolic foods, such as meat of the paschal lamb and bitter herbs, recalling the harsh life of slavery. Learn more about Passover in NatGeo Kids

Monday, April 22, and Tuesday, April 23, are designated half-O days in recognition of the first two days of Passover. Half-O days are full school days, but important events will not be held after school on those days. See the complete school year calendar.

Theravada New Year (O Day)

In countries where Theravada Buddhism is the most dominant religion, New Year is celebrated for three days from the first full moon in April. Theravada means “the teachings of the elders.” Celebrations begin with people attending the local temple in the morning for chanting and meditation. In the afternoon they have a water festival in which they meet the Buddha image and pay respect to the elderly by watering their hands together. Building sandcastles is also one of the most popular activities during this day of celebration.

Wednesday, April 24, is designated as an O day for Theravada New Year. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days. See the complete school year calendar.

Kiss and Ride Safety Reminders

Safety is our number one priority. Please remember to join the kiss-and-ride line upon arrival. It is imperative that parents/guardians do not park and have children walk across the parking lot upon morning arrival. All students must be dropped off in the kiss-and-ride line to ensure safety.

The kiss and ride line begins releasing students from cars at 8:15 a.m.

Thank you for being so understanding and for ensuring everyone's safety.

Social and Emotional Learning Screener Results Coming Soon

FCPS students in grades 3-12 took the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener during March, providing updated information on skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported.

In late April, individual student SEL Screener results will be available for families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

Get more information about the screener on the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage. For support in understanding your individual student’s results or ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or contact Tiffany Sutton, school counselor.

Moments of wonder: Students and teachers come together to witness the magic of a solar eclipse, sharing awe and learning under the cosmic spectacle above.  Thanks to our PTA for the glasses to make sure our eyes were protected and for our 1st grade student, Joel Goodman's Dad for coming in and teaching our 1st graders what a solar eclipse is!

Building champions on and off the field: George Mason Softball players came in to have lunch with our Kindergarten students!

SCA Spirit Week Woodson High School Art Shows

The Woodson High School Fine Arts Department is excited to invite the Woodson community to our annual art shows!

The Pyramid Art Show, which includes work from our elementary, middle, and high school students, opens on Tuesday, April 16. We will have a reception from 6-8pm in Cav Hall. Come on by to see what our K-11 artists have created this year!

On Thursday, April 18 from 6-8pm we will be celebrating our senior students at the Senior Art Show - our seniors’ culminating shows! Our upper-level senior artists have curated collections of their finest works and are looking forward to sharing this work with their families, friends, and community. We are so proud of our students and excited for them to have this special opportunity to share their work.

In between enjoying the artwork at both shows, visitors can bring home small, student-made artworks that will be for sale and bid on our famous hand-painted furniture.

Our students have worked so hard to hone their art-making skills and create these works. They (and we!) would be so honored to welcome you to one (or both!) of these events.

Sincerely, the WTW Art Department,

Deirdre Forgione, Leslie O’Shaughnessy, Andy Saffron, & Jocelyn Sowa

#EveryChildEveryDay ❤️

Big Heart, Tiny Hats: Vy Knits for Preemies! Sixth grader Vy used her spring break to knit adorable hats for premature babies! Each hat takes about 30 minutes to make, and Vy's dedication will bring warmth and comfort to many little ones. We're so grateful for Vy's kindness and to all our students who learn to knit with Ms. Brown and give back to the community!

Building Our Team: A Focus on Belonging! This month's staff meeting was all about fostering a sense of belonging! Manny Gomez Portillo from Region 5 led a fantastic session, and we were honored to hear from a Woodson High School SEAL member about the student perspective on belonging. We're committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all!

A Message from the Admin Team

Dear Little Run Family,

We hope everyone is enjoying a fantastic spring weekend! With the weather warming up and many spring sports kicking off, it's a wonderful time to be outside and active.

We're also happy to report that we had a smooth and positive transition back to school after spring break. The energy in the classrooms is high, and everyone seems ready for a fantastic fourth quarter.

Speaking of exciting events, a reminder that tomorrow (Monday, April 8) brings a partial solar eclipse! Last Friday, information was sent home via eNotify and reinforced by homeroom teachers to ensure clear communication to families.

Finally, a friendly reminder that there will be no school on Wednesday, April 10, in observance of Eid al-Fitr. We wish all our families who celebrate a joyous holiday!

We look forward to another productive week with our Roadrunners!

Sincerely,

Christie Yarn, Principal

National Library Week: April 7-13

April is School Library Month and it's a great time to celebrate the essential role that school librarians play in the lives of students. School librarians ensure students have access to a wide variety of high-quality books and resources that connect them to the world and build a culture of literacy. Librarians develop lessons that are meaningful to students and help them develop critical thinking, inquiry, and information literacy skills. They support learning across all subject areas by teaching students the skills to be independent problem-solvers and creative thinkers. By creating a safe environment for all students to be engaged and curious learners, FCPS libraries are places where everyone belongs.

We want to take a moment to shine a spotlight on our incredible school librarian, Ms. Beaumont! Last week we celebrated National School Librarian Day!

Ms. Beaumont goes above and beyond her role in countless ways. From organizing a fantastic book fair that fosters a love of reading, to coordinating with the news crew and yearbook team, Ms. Beaumont is a true asset to our school community. Her dedication doesn't stop there – she consistently finds new and engaging ways to enrich the learning experience for all our students.

Thank you, Ms. Beaumont, for everything you do! We are incredibly grateful for your hard work and enthusiasm.

Take a moment to learn more about FCPS Library Programs and share your appreciation of your school librarian!

Eid al-Fitr (Half-O Day, Holiday)

In Islam, Eid-al-Fitr is a three day festival to mark the end of Ramadan. Muslims dress in new clothes, give charity, and pray in congregation. Eid is celebrated with the exchange of presents and delicious food with family and friends. Read more at Britannica.com.

Tuesday, April 9, has been designated as a half-O day. Half-O days are full school days, but important events will not be held after school on those days. Wednesday, April 10, is an FCPS holiday and all schools and offices will be closed. See the complete School Year Calendar.

Autism Acceptance Month

April is Autism Acceptance Month. One in 44 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder in the United States, according to the CDC. Our schools and staff play a vital role in creating and ensuring inclusive environments that accommodate and affirm autistic students.

Month of the Military Child and Purple Up! Day

To show our support for all our military-connected families, we are inviting all Fairfax County students, families, school employees, and community members to “Purple Up!” on April 17  for military children. Why purple? Purple symbolizes all branches of the military as a combination of Army green, Marine Corps red, and Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force and Space Force blue.

☀️ Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

All students and staff at Little Run will be provided approved glasses to ensure safety. Additional information was sent via eNotify on Friday and/or directly from students' teachers. A New Family Literacy Program-Smithsonian National Museum of the American Latino Collaboration: Amplifying Voice and Belonging Among Multilingual Families.

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Latino (NMAL) advances the representation, understanding and appreciation of Latino history and culture in the United States. NMAL aims to bring the Molina Family Latino Gallery to the community, fostering trust and co-creation of the Gallery's learning opportunities, including activating the Learning Lounge as a space for direct community involvement. As part of a collaboration between NMAL and Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)  Family Literacy Program and working with NMAL Office of Audience Engagement during the fall of 2023 and spring 2024, Family Literacy participants at five sites (Woodlawn, Graham Road Community Building,  Hutchison, Centre Ridge and Baileys Lower) visited the Molina Family Latino Gallery inaugural exhibition of Presente! A Latino History of the United States to explore the theme of Latino changemakers. Following the visit, multi-session arts-based workshops are being held at each school. Participants engage in creating their own artworks, entitled “I am – Yo Soy”. These workshops aim to give access to the museum experience and to elevate multilingual participants' awareness of their own contributions to their families and communities by sharing identity and stories. NMAL plans to display the artworks at the museum’s GM Learning Lounge.

New Regulation on Meditation and Silent Reflection Spaces

FCPS has developed Regulation 1502 to ensure all students and staff have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school division. The regulation provides guidance for schools on how to manage requests for silent reflection during instructional and non-instructional time, and for students to leave school for religious activities.

These spaces are for individuals to engage in prayer, meditation, or silent reflection, inclusive of their religious or non-religious beliefs. Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time on a regular basis. Families are encouraged to contact the admin team regarding accommodations. View Regulation 1502. Visit FCPS' Guidelines for Religious Activities webpage for more information.

Students should follow additional precautions as outlined per the CDC upon resumption of normal activities.

#EveryChildEveryDay ❤️

Thanks to the PTA, students enjoyed a whirlwind tour of global music with Curtis Blues' Cultural Arts Assembly. Through interactive performances, students learned how instruments like the banjo, guitar, and percussion all play a role in the music we love today. This assembly was a fantastic reminder of how cultures around the world inspire and influence each other!

A big thank you to Ms. Rahman for joining her sons' kindergarten and 2nd-grade classes and sharing her experiences about Ramadan! Students learned about the importance of this month and gained a deeper appreciation for different cultures. Ms. Rahman's visit reminds us all of the value in understanding and celebrating the traditions of our classmates and neighbors.

Naval Aircrewman Sean Siner, stationed in Norfolk, VA, shares his military experiences with the Little Run Military Kids Club. Joined by his wife and son, Mr. Siner captivated the audience with tales from his service. We extend our heartfelt gratitude for his dedication and sacrifice to our country. Mr. Siner is the brother-in-law of Assistant Principal Hassen, further highlighting the strong bonds within our community.

A Message from the Admin Team

Dear Little Run Family,

This week has been a delight, filled with sunshine and a warm breeze that brought a touch of spring to our halls. It's a perfect reminder that brighter days are ahead!

We'd like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our dedicated PTA for sponsoring a fantastic cultural arts assembly on Wednesday. It was a vibrant and engaging experience for all our students, sparking curiosity and appreciation for different cultures.

On a different note, Friday brought a heartwarming moment to our Military Kids Club. Assistant Principal Hassen's brother-in-law, Naval Aircrewman Sean Siner, visited the club and shared his experiences. Mr. Siner's presentation resonated deeply with our military-connected students, fostering a sense of connection and shared understanding. The presentation culminated in a touching moment where a student presented Mr. Siner with a thank you card, and in return, Mr. Siner presented the student with a patch from his uniform – a cherished token of appreciation.

Looking ahead, next week promises to be a blast with spirit week kicking off! Get ready for some Little Run spirit, and excitement as we build anticipation for the upcoming Spring Break.

And to keep the momentum going, we hope to see everyone out on Sunday at noon as the George Mason softball team takes on Dayton! It's Youth Day, so wear your green for St. Patrick's Day and join the fun! The Mason softball team invites all their fans to celebrate with post-game autographs, poster giveaways, running of the bases, AND free t-shirts to the first 200 fans! It's sure to be a fantastic afternoon of family fun.

We wish you a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Christie Yarn, Principal

Our school typically conducts kindergarten registration events, including orientation, throughout the school year. Eligible children can also be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us plan, so that we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

Fairfax County’s Funding of the FCPS Budget

The average amount of funds transferred from Fairfax County to FCPS was 52.6% of county disbursements from fiscal years (FY) 2019-2023. It dipped to 51.6% in FY 2024. The County’s budget proposal for next year would transfer 51.4% of total disbursements.

If the county were to return to transferring 52.6% to FCPS for the upcoming year, that would equate to $63 million more to invest in excellence.

🩹 Measles Is Preventable

Measles is making headlines as the number of cases nationwide has topped 40, with three confirmed cases in people living in or traveling through the National Capital Region.

The good news is that measles is preventable through vaccination! Vaccines help teach the immune system how to defend against germs, helping to build up natural defenses. Give your child the best protection against measles with two doses of the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine. Visit the Fairfax County Health Department website to find out more about measles.

Extended Hours at Immunization Clinics

To help parents/caregivers obtain vaccinations for their children, the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) will offer immunization clinics with extended hours:

#EveryChildEveryDay ❤️

Calling all bookworms! Our halls were buzzing with excitement during Read Across America Week's Book Fair! Students dove into a fantastical sea of stories, and we're pretty sure some even discovered magical portals between the pages. A HUGE "Thank you!" to Ms. Beaumont for making it all happen.

On behalf of Ms. Beaumont, BIG thanks to our amazing PTA, staff, and parent volunteers who helped make the fair and family night a literary legend! ✨

Future presidents in the making! Our fabulous first graders journeyed back in time on a field trip to Mount Vernon. They explored the historic home of George Washington and learned all about early American life. Thanks to our dedicated teachers and super-powered parent volunteers for making this trip so educational and enriching!

Shining a Light on Success! The Little Run staff team recently had the opportunity to connect with colleagues from Region 5 to share our triumphs in academics, social-emotional learning, behavior, attendance, and professional learning communities. We also gained valuable insights to fuel our continued growth as a school and lifelong learners. Go Team Little Run!

In case you missed it on your Facebook feed... Ms. Dupont is making a big impact! Ms. Dupont's dedication was recently featured on the FCPS Facebook page, and we couldn't be more grateful for all she does every day. #proud #FCPS

The Mason Softball team battled hard last weekend, showing true grit despite facing some tough opponents on Saturday. But never fear, the Patriots dug deep and soared to victory with two wins on Sunday! Thank you to those who were able to come out and cheer them on! Mark your calendars and head to the Mason Softball Field next Sunday, March 17, for Youth Day! Let's go, Mason!

A Message from the Admin Team

Dear Little Run Family,

A heartfelt thank you goes out to Ms. Beaumont for her tireless efforts in making the Book Fair such a magical experience.

We know the magic wouldn't have happened without the incredible support of our amazing parent and caregiver volunteers. Your dedication and willingness to give your time is truly invaluable to our school community. From setting up displays to helping students find the perfect book, your contributions were instrumental in making the Book Fair and family night a smashing success.

We are incredibly grateful for your ongoing support of our school and its many special events. Together, we are fostering a lifelong love of learning in our students!

Sincerely,

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

This year, spring break is March 25-29. We will be eager to welcome your children back to school on Wednesday, April 3, after two teacher work days. Student attendance is very important. Every day, our teachers will be teaching, and students will be learning. Studies have shown that just two absences per month can cause students to fall behind. Let’s finish this school year strong. Visit FCPS’ website for attendance resources.

Lightspeed Classroom Management

As part of our commitment to creating a safe and focused learning environment for our students, our school is using a classroom management tool that will help teachers better connect with student devices during classes. We are continuing to expand our use over the coming weeks. This tool will provide teachers with a number of helpful features:

  • Easily view student screens in real time from the teacher console to see which students may need guidance or support.
  • Focus student attention on a particular website on their device to minimize distractions.
  • Pause student access to the internet to focus on other classroom tasks.

We believe this classroom management tool will allow us to maximize class time to support your student’s learning while at school. Please note that student devices will not be monitored outside of school hours. The regular filters remain in place on school devices, but once they are home, teachers cannot monitor students. As parents, we would like to encourage you to sign up for your own Lightspeed reports, which will allow you to see how your child is spending time on the computer during and after school hours.

New Regulation on Meditation and Reflection Spaces

FCPS has developed Regulation 1502 to ensure all students and staff have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school division. The regulation provides guidance for schools on how to manage requests for silent reflection during instructional and non-instructional time, and for students to leave school for religious activities.

These spaces are designated areas within a school or on school premises for individuals to engage in prayer, meditation, or silent reflection, inclusive of their religious or non-religious beliefs. Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time on a regular basis. Families are encouraged to contact the principal/family liaison/their child’s teacher regarding accommodations. View Regulation 1502. Visit FCPS' Guidelines for Religious Activities webpage for more information.

☀️ Safely View the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m.

Because the timing overlaps with dismissal, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

🥁 Summer Camps and Learning Programs

Have you made summer plans for your child yet? Are you looking for a summer camp for your child with special needs?

The Family Resource Center has compiled information on summer camps including local options, camps for students with special needs (sorted by need), and camps for students experiencing grief or who have parents in the military.

Did you know that March is Music In Our Schools Month? Little Run PTA, in partnership with Arts4LearningVA, is excited to present local musician Curtis Blues for the Cultural Arts school assembly on March 13 at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. in the gym. It may seem as American as apple pie, but the banjo has its roots in Mali, Africa while the guitar comes from Spain and many percussion rhythms can be traced to Cuba and South America. In this interactive program, Curtis Blues plays musical instruments from around the world, demonstrating how American popular music springs from many different cultures and countries. Students will learn how different cultures approached building instruments from their unique environments and how their choices still influence the music we listen to today.

A Message from the Admin Team

Dear Little Run Family,

As we head into March, we send you warm wishes and excitement for all that's ahead.

We are thrilled to remind everyone that the George Mason softball team kicks off their weekend with their home opener tomorrow, March 2, at noon against Stony Brook. We encourage everyone to come out and support these dedicated student-athletes as they take the field. It's a fantastic opportunity to cheer on our adopt-a-school partners and experience the spirit of teamwork and community. (Please visit the Mason website for any weather updates.)

Beyond the field, our commitment to learning lives within our students and extends to our educators. We're proud to share that many of our teachers and staff have recently participated in various professional development opportunities on and off-site. This dedication to continuous learning ensures our teachers have the latest best practices and tools to provide our students with the richest educational experience possible. Our teachers and staff remain lifelong learners as they facilitate our students' daily learning journeys.

As we move through March, remember it's Women's History Month. This dedicated time provides a chance to acknowledge the incredible contributions of women throughout history and their ongoing impact on our world. We encourage everyone to explore, celebrate, and learn more about these inspiring figures.

Please remember that throughout the year, as we celebrate and recognize various cultural holidays and observances, we encourage you to reach out directly to us and your child's teacher regarding accommodations, including but not limited to those around lunch, prayer/meditation and silent reflection spaces and times, and instruction.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend, and we are thrilled to see all of the great reading materials our students and families select next week as we really dive into our Book Fair.

Wishing you all a wonderful and enriching March, as this is such an exciting time of the year!

Sincerely,

Christie Yarn, Principal

Lesley Hassen, Assistant Principal

Do You Know Where FCPS Funding Comes From?

The majority of FCPS funding is requested from the Fairfax County government, which generates its revenue from real estate and personal property taxes. The Commonwealth of Virginia provides the next largest source of revenue to FCPS through state aid and sales tax. The rest of the funding comes from a variety of sources, including federal aid and tuition for non-county residents. (The numbers above represent the FY 2025 proposed school operating fund in millions.)

FCPS does not have the authority to impose taxes and may only charge fees where the Commonwealth of Virginia has granted specific authority. Learn more about FCPS’ FY 2025 Advertised Budget.

Taking this survey will also help strengthen the partnership between your family and our school. When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, better social skills and behavior, and an increased likelihood of graduating high school.

The survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete and will be available in 10 languages. Please visit the Family Engagement Survey webpage for more information. Your voice matters!

#EveryChildEveryDay ❤️

We were lucky to have Officer Sehrer visit from Frost Middle School this week! He connected with students and staff, showing off his rock-paper-scissors skills and bringing smiles with fist bumps. Not only is Officer Sehrer a familiar face around Little Run and Frost, but he was also recently recognized by FCPD as December's Officer of the Month! Thank you, Officer Sehrer, for all you do to keep our school community safe and positive. We appreciate you! 🚓

Look at these bright smiles and imagine the echoes of laughter! Our preschoolers are busy exploring and engaging in a world of wonder at various learning centers. From creating masterpieces to reading a good book, each day brings new opportunities for discovery and growth. A huge shout-out to our dedicated preschool team who nurture these young minds with creativity, love, and endless enthusiasm. They make learning an adventure! ✨

We're excited to announce the launch of our new Military Kids Club, a space for our young heroes to connect, share experiences, and build friendships! This month's inaugural meeting included a delicious cereal bar that fueled conversations amongst our club members. We can't wait for future gatherings featuring guest speakers, "Scoops for Troops" fun, and much more! A special shout-out to Ms. Sutton, our dedicated school counselor, for spearheading this initiative. At Little Run, we're committed to fostering a sense of belonging and celebrating the daily sacrifices of our military-connected families. ❤️

Little Run SACC stars took center court during the George Mason Men's Basketball halftime show! Our talented dancers joined forces with students from other SACC programs, putting on a dazzling performance that had the crowd cheering. We're so proud of their hard work, dedication, and school spirit!

Little Run SACC brought their "A" game to the George Mason Men's Basketball halftime show, dazzling the crowd with their coordinated dance routine! This incredible performance wouldn't have been possible without the tireless efforts and unwavering support of our dedicated SACC teachers, who nurtured the students' talent and guided them every step of the way. We also extend a heartfelt thank you to the families and staff who came out to cheer on our young stars! Your presence meant the world to them.

Look at these proud faces and creative constructions! Our second graders are diving deep into the world of Critical and Creative Thinking (CCT) with Ms. Hitchcock. Ms. Hitchcock's engaging lessons foster collaborative learning and spark curiosity through hands-on activities like building. In these photos, students are putting their problem-solving skills to the test, collaborating on designs, and celebrating their accomplishments. We are so grateful for Ms. Hitchcock's dedication to inspiring young minds and fostering a love for learning! ✨

The Positivity Project at Little Run

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Love of Learning. Love of learning means you master new topics on your own or in school.

Those with a love of learning are intrinsically motivated and engaged in a topic regardless of achieving an external standard. They enjoy learning simply for the sake of learning. They don’t need a prize of a high grade as a reward. Their reward is the process of doing the work and improving.

Developing a love of learning is highly beneficial for an individual. It means that they are intrinsically motivated to deepen their existing skills and abilities, or learn something completely new. Since intrinsically motivated action is correlated with positive emotions, those who act on their love of learning may also have enhanced mental and physical health. Additionally, individuals who love learning have the desire and ability to overcome challenges, due to a sense of autonomy and control over their environment.

To practice and encourage the character strength of love of learning with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

#EveryChildEveryDay ❤️

Our week got off to a winning start with a visit from our amazing adopt-a-school partners, the Mason Softball team! These student-athletes traded in their cleats for bowling shoes and joined our kindergarteners for an afternoon of strikes, spares, and laughter. It was a heartwarming reminder of the power of community and the positive impact role models can have. Thank you, Mason Softball, for kicking off our week with a strike-tacular time!

From adorable card exchanges to surprise treats, Valentine's Day at Little Run was a delightful celebration of friendship and appreciation. Our students filled the day with laughter and smiles as they exchanged Valentine's with their classmates. Meanwhile, the admin team delivered treats to the staff, showing gratitude for everyone's hard work.

Love & laughter filled the air at our Valentine's Day mentor-mentee breakfast! Thanks Ms. Sutton for making it magical #mentorshipmatters #valentinesday

Lights, Camera, Action! Two budding Ben Franklins ignite their passion for science during their electricity unit. Watch them light up the classroom with their teamwork and electrifying discoveries! #MakingScienceFun

A Message from the Admin Team

Dear Little Run Family,

What a week it's been! Our halls were buzzing with excitement and heartwarming moments, both inside and outside the classroom.

Our kindergartners had a "strike-tacular" start to the week, hitting the lanes with their heroes from the Mason Softball team during P.E. class! It was an afternoon filled with cheers, high fives, and the joy of mentorship blossoming alongside teamwork.

We believe in supporting our partners wholeheartedly, and that includes cheering them on from the sidelines. So mark your calendars and show your Roadrunner spirit loud and proud by joining us as we cheer on the Mason Patriots, our adopt-a-school partners, at their games on Saturday, March 2nd at noon against Stony Brook (promotion: strike out cancer weekend and canned food drive) and Sunday, March 17 at noon against Dayton (promotion: mental health awareness weekend and youth day)! Together, let's create a sea of green and gold as we celebrate teamwork, community, and the power of making a difference! Click HERE to access the full Mason Softball schedule.

Moving onto Valentine's Day, we saw connections strengthen at the delicious mentor-mentee breakfast orchestrated by our incredible school counselor, Ms. Sutton. Little Run's dedication to fostering meaningful relationships is truly inspiring. And of course, we couldn't forget our amazing staff on Valentine's Day! We surprised them with special treats as a token of our appreciation for their tireless efforts and dedication to every student.

But learning never stops at Little Run! Classrooms were alive with electrifying science experiments, captivating stories, and engaging lessons that ignite a love of learning and empower our students to grow.

Just a friendly reminder, there's no school tomorrow, Monday, February 19. We'll be back with open arms on Tuesday, February 20.

Thank you for being part of this vibrant and supportive community. You make Little Run a special place where hearts connect, minds grow, and learning thrives.

Warmly,

Christie Yarn, Principal

Lesley Hassen, Assistant Principal

The Little Run Way in Specials

Are you looking for a topic to engage in at the dinner table this weekend? Or on the drive to your next destination? Ask your child about The Little Run Way in SPECIALS!

Consider asking your child(ren) one or more of the following questions:

  • What does it look and sound like to be respectful while learning in specials (music, art, P.E., FLES, library, etc.)?
  • How do you show responsibility when you are in specials with your classmates?
  • What does it mean to be ready while participating in specials?
The Positivity Project at Little Run

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Humility. Humility means you do not seek the spotlight. You let your actions speak for themselves.

Humble people have an accurate (not underestimated) sense of their abilities and achievements. They hold the capacity to acknowledge their mistakes and limitations, and are open to advice and new ideas. They do not show off their possessions or accomplishments.

Developing humility is associated with positive developmental outcomes in individuals. It allows a person to honestly reflect on their abilities and acknowledge how and where they can improve. Humility opens them up to new ideas, advice, and (consequently) abilities that pride, arrogance, or pretentiousness often block. Therefore, humility makes them desired members of a team.

To practice and encourage the character strength of humility with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2) where together you will watch a video, read a quote and talk about the answers to three questions.

Eating Disorder Parent Information

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information to parents annually about eating disorders with parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.

Fiscal Year 2025 Proposed Budget Focused on Educational Excellence and Competitive Compensation

At the last School Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid proposed a budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 that focuses on excellence and providing students an equitable education in an inclusive and respectful environment, where access, opportunity, and achievement are available to all.

The budget also prioritizes competitive compensation to attract and retain a world-class workforce.

The FY 2025 Proposed Budget totals $3.8 billion, an increase of $301.8 million, or 8.6%, over the FY 2024 Approved Budget. Nearly 86% of the budget is focused on instruction. Key highlights include:

  • Supporting students academically by maintaining existing class size formulas and providing necessary support to all students.
  • Retaining and attracting world-class educators with a 6% market scale adjustment.
  • Strengthening student well-being outside of the classroom with expanded athletics offerings, additional athletic trainers, and enhanced stipends for fine and performing arts.
  • Continuing initiatives including expansion of inclusive preschool, adoption of green initiatives, and funding assistant director of student activities positions previously funded with ESSER III.

Special education daily contract extensions, funding for the safety and security screening program, and late buses to support academics and activities at middle schools are several of the priorities to be addressed at the end of FY 2024.

The School Board is scheduled to adopt the Advertised Budget on Thursday, February 22. Read more about the proposed budget. Keep up with FCPS’ budget development process.

Look closely at this vibrant underwater paradise! What you see isn't just a sparkling fish tank, it's a testament to the power of community spirit. Spotlight on Mr. Arrell and Mr. Goodman, two amazing dads who volunteered their time and energy to revitalize this special place in our front office. With their sons as their cheerleaders, they scrubbed, planted, and transformed it into a dazzling spectacle!

Their dedication goes beyond the fish tank. It's a reminder that when we work together, even the smallest acts of kindness can create something beautiful. Just like these fathers and sons, each of us has the power to contribute, to brighten our community, and inspire others.

So, the next time you pass by the tank, smile! It's more than just a home for the many fish and snails, it's a symbol of teamwork, love, and the endless possibilities that bloom when we come together.

A big thank you to Mr. Arrell, Mr. Goodman, and their sons for showing us the true meaning of community spirit!

A Message from the Little Run Admin Team

Dear Little Run Families,

What a whirlwind of excitement it's been at Little Run this week! As we settle into the heart of February, we want to take a moment to reflect on the joy of this past week and share some exciting news for the future.

First and foremost, a huge round of applause for Ms. Sutton, our incredible school counselor! National School Counseling Week gave us the perfect opportunity to celebrate her dedication and endless support for our students. From small groups to whole classroom lessons, Ms. Sutton plays a vital role in fostering students' social, emotional, and academic well-being. Thank you, Ms. Sutton, for being a shining example of what makes Little Run such a special place!

And oh, what a spectacle our annual PTA Talent Show was! Our hearts swelled with pride as we witnessed the incredible talents of our students, from singers and dancers to gymnasts and comedians. The dedication of our PTA in organizing this event, and the enthusiastic participation of our young performers, made it a truly unforgettable evening.

Jumping across the calendar, the 100th Day of School brought a wave of creativity and laughter! From dressing up as 100-year-olds to completing 100-themed activities, our classrooms buzzed with energy and engagement. It's these moments of shared learning and fun that make Little Run such a vibrant and nurturing environment.

A special shout-out to Mr. Goodman and Mr. Arrell (highlighted in the photo above)! Their passion and efforts in transforming our fish tank into a vibrant underwater scene are truly inspiring. Their act serves as a reminder that even small gestures can make a big difference and bring joy to our school community.

And now, looking ahead, mark your calendars for our upcoming SCA Spirit Day on February 14! Students and staff alike are encouraged to wear red, pink, and white in celebration of Valentine's Day. Let's spread the love and school spirit by showing our festive colors!

As always, we are incredibly grateful for each and every member of the Little Run community. Your dedication, support, and enthusiasm are what truly make our school thrive. We look forward to sharing more exciting news and moments with you in the weeks to come!

With warm regards,

Christie Yarn, Principal

Lesley Hassen, Assistant Principal

A Fond Farewell and Exciting Transitions at Little Run!

The Little Run community is brimming with exciting changes! While we celebrate some new beginnings, we also acknowledge a bittersweet farewell. This Friday, we bid adieu to Ms. Nicki Marko, our esteemed student monitor, who has accepted a prestigious position as the Director of Programming for Smithsonian Enterprises, the media arm of the Smithsonian Institution. We are incredibly proud of Ms. Marko's accomplishment and grateful for the positive impact she's made on our students and staff. Though she'll be stepping away from her monitoring role, we're thrilled to welcome Ms. Marko back as a valued parent within the Little Run family!

Meanwhile, Ms. Van Luong is embarking on a new chapter within our school! While we won't be saying goodbye, we extend a warm welcome to Ms. V in her exciting new role as an instructional assistant. Ms. V's dedication and commitment to our students will undoubtedly continue to shine in this new capacity, as she plays a vital role in supporting learning throughout the school building.

And with open arms, we introduce Ms. Farhana Shoshi, our newest student monitor! Ms. Shoshi brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm, eager to create a nurturing and enriching environment for our students. We were inspired by her passion for education and her dedication to empowering young minds. As Ms. Shoshi shared:

"Joining Little Run ES feels like a wonderful opportunity to contribute to the growth and development of the students, and I am eager to play a positive role in fostering a nurturing learning environment. I believe in the power of education and am excited about the prospect of contributing to the success and well-being of the students at Little Run."

Beyond her educational endeavors, Ms. Shoshi finds joy in spending time with her daughter and sharing her cultural heritage through delicious dishes like Biryani. We have no doubt her warmth, dedication, and love of learning will be a valuable addition to the Little Run community!

Please join us in wishing Ms. Marko all the best in her new adventure and thanking her for her lasting impact. We also extend a heartfelt welcome to Ms. Shoshi and are excited to see her journey within Little Run unfold. And to Ms. V, a warm congratulations on your new role! We are thrilled to continue witnessing your contributions to our school's success.

The Little Run Way on the Bus

Are you looking for a topic to engage in at the dinner table this weekend? Or on the drive to your next destination? Ask your child about The Little Run Way on the BUS!

Consider asking your child(ren) one or more of the following questions:

  • What does it look and sound like to be respectful while riding on the bus?
  • How do you show responsibility when you are waiting at the bus stop? Or when you are in your seat?
  • What does it mean to be ready while sitting with a friend on the bus?
The Positivity Project at Little Run

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Love. Love means you value close relationships with others and being close to people.

The character strength of love represents the way we think, feel, and behave towards the people with whom we have close relationships. When one person loves another person, that person: comforts and makes the other feel safe; sacrifices on the other’s behalf; supports the other during struggles; and places the others' needs ahead of their own. If you love a person, that person makes you feel safe and secure. You can be yourself with that person. You miss that person when they are not around.

On a group level, love is vital for the wellbeing of society. The world is endlessly interconnected. We are all dependent upon each other for survival and happiness. Love produces positive feelings, which help negate loneliness, anxiety, and depression. Without love, we cannot form strong relationships with our families, friends, or communities. A world without love is a dangerous world.

To practice and encourage the character strength of love with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

🥁 Sign Up for FCPS Summer Camps

Registration is now open for several summer camps and learning opportunities offered by Fairfax County Public Schools for all students.

Career and Technical Education (CTE) camps and Institute for the Arts camps will be held in July at Lake Braddock Secondary School from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bus transportation will be available from select FCPS middle and high schools.

Tech Adventure Camp is available for current grade K-5 students to explore STEAM, culinary, health, trades, and business and marketing areas. E-IFTA is a weekly arts camp for elementary students who love to sing, dance, act, perform, make, and create. Visit the E-IFTA webpage to register.

Tutor.com Teacher-Referred Tutoring

Through Schoology®, all FCPS students have 24/7 access to no-cost, year-round, on-demand, 1-to-1 tutoring services through Tutor.com.

A new Teacher-Referred Tutoring program feature provides targeted support and extends student learning. Teachers can now refer students for tutoring, with their specific needs already identified. Students can get extra support — on their own schedule — and reinforce their in-class learning.

Caregivers can guide students to access expert tutoring, homework help, and writing support by clicking on the Tutor.com icon in their Schoology portal—anytime, anywhere.

Plus, look for teachers’ tutoring session referrals on the Tutor.com homepage.

📚 Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools to use as part of their literacy instruction. Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills. It also provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support, and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize.

Attend an information night on Monday, February 12, at 6:30 p.m., at Thoreau Middle School. Parents/caregivers will learn more about Lexia, and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom and supporting student growth in reading. Attendees will also get tips for supporting their students at home.

Register to attend or submit a question in advance. Unable to attend in person? Join on Zoom

Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.
